Roof of Africa Trek

Information Sheet

Lesotho

Into the 30300 square kilometers that is the diminutive, land locked state of Lesotho is concentrated some of the most spectacular scenery to be found on the continent of Africa. A full 85 percent of the country consists of a mass of mountains while the remaining 15 percent is comprised of lower level view sites from which to admire the heights. Lesotho is a delight to artists and photographers, notable for the vividness of its scenic colours, yellow, orange and red sandstone cliffs, intensely blue skies in summer with towering banks of white clouds, green grass turning brown in winter, and the transparent blueness of high basalt mountains shrouded in mantles of snow.

In addition to these rich colours, the rocks have been modeled into fantastic shapes by natural and unnatural erosion, giving the place the appearance of the abandoned toy room of an untidy nursery of giants.

Balancing rocks, table-topped mountains, pinnacles, spires, deep ravines, dongas, cliffs, caves and almost every rock formation imaginable are littered over this landscape. The effect is bizarre, eerie and surprising.

Day 1

Depart Johannesburg International Airport for Lesotho. After entering Lesotho we travel to Malealea lodge, which is situated at around 6500 ft in the aptly named Valley of Paradise. After settling in, you will be entertained by the sounds of a local Basotho band using home made instruments. Overnight Malealea Lodge.

Day 2

Early departure from Malealea on foot for ± 8 hours to the small village of Ribaneng. Basutho ponies will carry excess gear, ensuring appreciation of the magnificent scenery. After arrival at Ribaneng we climb for ± 1 hour to the beautiful waterfall behind the village. Overnight Ribaneng in Basutho village huts.

Day 3

Depart from Ribaneng for a trek over remote mountain passes to the village of Ketane. After arrival a short hike will take us to the magnificent Ketane waterfall and Gorge with a 122 meter drop. Overnight in Ketane village.

Day 4

Crossing the Ketane River, the trail for today comprises a combination of steep, narrow ledges, with sheer drops, affording you breathtaking views, and crossing undulating grasslands that at certain times of the year seem as if they have been set alight by the thousands of Red Hot Pokers flowering in unison. We trek on to the village of Sekoting. Sekoting, meaning "the wild Pig’s trough" in BaSotho, due to the villages location in a pristine valley surrounded by mountains. Overnight Sekoting.

Day 5

Today will be spent returning to Malealea via the Valley of Paradise. Overnight Malealea.

Day 6

Very early departure for the Karoo. Karoo is a Hottentot word meaning "Dry, arid thirstland." This refers to the semi-desert interior, which constitutes 35 % of South Africa’s land surface and has the richest desert flora in the world. The Karoo captivates your soul – as one writer summed it up – "It is a place of the purist Starlight and the widest dawns, aromatic, bittersweet in their nostalgic brevity, for all of it is swiftly consumed by the rising sun." Overnight Nieu Bethesda.

Day 7

Nieu Bethesda is a tiny fertile oasis in the vast and arid Great Karoo. The late Helen Martin’s Owl House is the reason so may people come to this remote village, but the clear light, big skies, babbling water furrows and gentle pace of life are why so many stay. Morning climb to the top of Compassberg, at 2502 m the highest peak in the Sneeuberge range, and one of the highest in the Cape province. Afternoon can be spent at leasure exploring the Owl House and Town.

Day 8

Depart Nieu Bethesda for the Western Cape. Arriving in Ceres in the afternoon, we set off on one of the excellent walking trails like the Toll House trail or the Van Stadensrust Trail, exploring this beautifull area named after the Roman goddess of agriculture. Overnight in Ceres

Day 9

After breakfast depart for The Cederberg mountain range. The Cedarberg gives its name to the Cederberg formation, a narrow shale band that is locally referred to as "Die Trap" or in English "The Step," because of its characteristic manner in which it weathers. The Cedarberg’s spectacular rock formations result from a number of factors including the flat lying nature of the geology, well defined fracture and jointing patterns, chemical composition of the rocks, climatic conditions and time. Arrive at campsite in afternoon. Overnight.

Day 10-12

The next 3 Days will be spent trekking in the Cederberg wilderness area. A hallmark of this trail is the remarkable scenes that the trailist will observe. There are caves, waterfalls, stupendous view sites and astonishing formations such as the Wolfberg Arch and the Maltese Cross, a rock pillar standing 9 meter high, like an ancient totem pole in an eerie setting of rock shapes reminiscent of the petrified forms of worshippers of some forgotten god of ancient times. These bizarre rock shapes are a feature of the range, masquerading as myriad different things – faces, animals, bridges, archways. The fiery colours of the sandstone formations, the heady clarity of the air, the brilliance of the stars at night and the magnificence of the wild flowers make the atmosphere unique. Three nights camping in the Wilderness.

Day 13

Depart from The Cederberg range for Cape Town. After checking in at our lodge the balance of the afternoon can be spent at leisure and sightseeing.

Day 14

Today will be set aside for a moderate 6-7 hour climb of Table Mountain, focusing on unusual ascents rather than the standard routes. At 1086 meters Table Mountain is no giant, but standing next to the sea, every meter of its distinctive shape is visible. Looking down upon Cape Town from Table Mountain is one of the great views of the world. Fantastic views of Cape Town with some adventure await us as we tackle some short and exciting rock steps on our way to the top – a good all round experience. Overnight Cape Town.

Day 15

A full day sightseeing awaits us, with a visit to Clifton, Camps Bay, Hout Bay, Cape Point and the Good Hope Nature Reserve, the Naval town of Simon’s Town , the Boulders Penguin Colony and a Wine estate to round off the day. Overnight Cape Town.

Day 16

After Breakfast depart for Cape Town International airport for return flight.
